Gen V 1:08 Guardians of Godolkin

Gen V 1:08 Guardians of Godolkin — some thoughts

In the final analysis (this is the season finale, but worry not as season 2 is already confirmed) Gen V is part of the wider story of The Boys and nowhere more so than this episode with three major characters crossing over. The overall story of The Woods, our heroes and not so heroes moves away from relationships into mayhem and murder. While that might be a good name for a game, I did feel this took something away from the season.

The ending (see below) while lining pieces back up for season 2 was also a little disappointing at first watch, but perhaps inevitable as the writers clearly wanted to keep as many of the God U students alive (ish) as possible.

Murder and Mayhem [Spoilers]

While the narrative centre of the season up to now has been Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair), it now shifts to Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) and Sam (Asa Germann). Given I was sure both were likely to not survive season 1, particularly as Cate kills Principle Shetty and free the prisoners of The Woods to go on a murderous rampage.

Many humans and supes later, it’s to Ashley to make an escape back to Vought and bring in Homelander for a crossover cameo. He arrives just as Marie has dealt a fatal blow to Cate and decides Marie is the villain. This leaves Cate and Sam to be the new Guardians of Godolkin and our heroes (Maries, Emma, Ben and the Jordans) incarcerated somewhere.

Cue the credits and a sneak scene with none other than Butcher exploring the wreckage of The Woods…

Overall

I think it’s right to keep Gen V connected to The Boys, they did well keeping that back until the characters became established. I gather the threat from this series is the base for season 4 of The Boys, and I hope that’s it for now. Season 2 has a lot to sort out, probably in 2025. It’s been a good watch, but I still think I prefer The Boys. Let’s see if there are any reciprocal crossovers as and when Butcher returns.
