Film and TV production

The impact of strikes on the UK film industry

Now the various writers’ and actors’ strikes are over, the industry moves on. While there’s hope lost production might result in a downstream glut (as there was once pandemic restrictions began to lift), the current impact on the UK is substantial.

The Knowledge reports UK spend for film productions for the first quarter (Q1) of 2024 was £211m, 45% lower than the £381m reported in the first three months of 2023, according to figures published by the British Film Institute (BFI).

There’s a lot more data, including:

For Q1 2024, the total number of films that started production was 22, which is 19 fewer than the 41 reported for Q1 2023 at this stage last year.

The article doesn’t draw any conclusion about our exposure to US investment — it might be argued the odd fallow period is made up for by the sheer volume of work we get from many places. Some was mentioned last week, and I’d have liked this piece to draw a bigger conclusion. I’m sure those working in production just want to work!
